Apple gets a letter
Jason Kottke writes to Apple support:
"I purchased a new Powerbook three weeks ago. It was working fine until a few hours ago when you announced the new Intel-powered MacBook Pro at MacWorld and I started to cry. 'Four to fives times faster,' I sobbed, 'a built-in iSight, and a brighter, wider screen.'"
My wife, son and a colleague, all owners of now "obsolete" iMacs are singing the same blues. While the particulars are painful, I'm in favor of the principle at work, creative destruction. Have a great product (iPod Mini) that's a bestseller? Get rid of it and release something even better (Nano). Same idea behind the new iMac and MacBook.
Incremental change is boring and Apple knows it. And knowing what we know about Apple's approach to product intros no one can say they didn't see it coming.
Not that I don't feel for you, Jason. I hope Apple comes through for you.
(1/18/06 update: Yes, Jason, I know you were joking. However, I've heard plenty of serious angst about the subject. Your post was a good intro to the topic.)
